The Resort will be the world’s first to create a multi-generational destination centered around sports, retail and hospitality including an authentic Hawaiian culture-centric surfing lagoon. The state-of-the-art wave making technology for this project is by Wavegarden Cove® and features other skill-based recreational elements as well. There is a unique focus on health, wellness, and education by the highly trained Honokea staff. Other resort amenities include retail space, dining, gyms, and boutique lodging, all of which adhere to the highest levels of sustainable design and construction. The result is purpose-driven real estate that benefits both people and the planet while creating a sense of community by incorporating elements of authentic Hawaiian culture and hospitality.

“Selecting the right consultants was absolutely critical for us,” said Honokea CEO Keno Knieriem, adding “Since this project involves so many different elements that have never been combined like this before, we reviewed several fantastic firms before ultimately making our choice. We felt that these 4 firms naturally aligned with our vision and we can’t wait to see them not only bring that vision to life, but take it even further.”

The Honokea team first came into contact with Lake Flato in 2013, while doing pre-development work for the Nland Surf Park in Austin, Texas. Lake|Flato is a nationally recognized firm known for creating memorable destinations that uniquely fit their environments.

These projects embrace the nature of the landscape and particular culture of the place, whether it be in Austin’s funky South Congress district at the Hotel San Jose, the mangrove wetlands of the Florida Keys, or the high Chihuahuan desert of Marfa, Texas. There was an immediate synergy and with the Coachella Valley project we immediately thought of Lake|Flato as an ideal partner to lead our design team.

“The Honokea Surf Village is an amazing opportunity to create a one of a kind destination. It is a project that aligns closely to our design philosophy of building with respect to the environment. We are genuinely excited to work with this dynamic team to bring the vision of Honokea to fruition.” – Bob Harris, Partner, Lake|Flato Architects. Mickie Riley of the Rilington group adds, “As the local real estate development partner we are excited to work with such a world renowned design team to bring this state-of-the-art attraction to our Coachella Valley.”
